The award for most spectacular amaryllis for me this winter season is ‘Amadeus Candy’. I’ve never seen a bulb perform like this one has. I enjoyed three scapes and at one point all of them were blooming at the same time. And there are still a few flowers yet to open up.
This cultivar was the very last of my bulbs to bloom, but it was definitely worth the wait. Two stalks topped out at 18 inches, and the third reached about 4 inches and decided that was plenty high. Those 8-inch-wide flowers covered up the stalks, so there were blooms from top to bottom on one side.
Photos can’t capture how amazing the display has been. And to add some last-minute pizzazz, the final flowers are showing more of a flush of pink on the petals than the previous ones.
It’s always hard to know if a cultivar is special or if that particular bulb simply had everything it needed to put on a great show, but I’m very impressed with ‘Amadeus Candy’ and would definitely try this cultivar again.
