Usually I’m really good about deadheading my annuals and perennials and keeping the garden fresh and tidy, but this fall I lost my oomph and let things slide. I bet I’m going to regret it next year when all sorts of strange seedlings start popping out of the ground.
There are goldfinches everywhere right now and they are quite pleased that I’ve allowed many of my flowers go to seed. They land on my zinnias and Joe Pye weed and go for a ride as the plants sway wildly back and forth under their weight. When things settle down they poke and yank at the flower heads to get the seeds. Meanwhile the juncos and White-throated Sparrows do clean-up duty on the ground.
If nothing else my laziness is saving me a little money on birdseed.
