This week you need a cozy hat and scarf to be comfortable just about anywhere in the United States except Florida. Here in southern Wisconsin we’ve dipped below zero a few times, but it’s the wind that’s been particularly nasty. I always feel sorry for the birds (and even those crazy squirrels) when it gets this cold.
On sunny afternoons the birds like to fly to the shrub by my window and turn their backsides to the sun for a little solarizing.
I like to think of it as the bird equivalent of putting your mittens or socks on the furnace register or diving into a pile of laundry that’s just been removed from the dryer.
