During the breeding season male Northern Cardinals are very territorial, so you’ll only see them with their mate and perhaps their offspring. But in the winter it isn’t unusual to see flocks of cardinals.
Two years ago I had a nice little flock of 8 birds that stuck around for the winter. All but two were males. It was always exciting to see them at the feeders or hopping around under the arborvitaes.
I’m almost certain that a flock has formed again this year, but so far I haven’t been able to figure out the exact number of birds. I do know there are more females than males this time, but that’s okay because I think the tan and red ladies are almost as pretty.
