Up for the Challenge

Every since I took down the hopper feeders to discourage the starlings from eating me out of house and home, I’ve been a little worried about the other birds. It’s been so wickedly cold for weeks and some birds just aren’t designed to eat from a hanging feeder.

The “Most Confused Award” goes to the Mourning Doves. They land on the hanging feeder hooks and sit for long periods of time craning their necks around. Eventually they give up and fly to the ground to duke it out with the squirrels for table scraps.

However, the Blue Jays haven’t missed a beat. You’d think they were woodpeckers the way they maneuver around those peanut feeders:
