Hungry Hummers

There are still a few hummingbirds hanging around my backyard flowers. They are fattening up before they take off on their long migration to Central America which can include a non-stop, 500-mile flight across the Gulf of Mexico. It’s amazing that such tiny birds can survive such an arduous journey, but they do.

I have some metal “branches” that I attach to my feeder pole system. They serve as a landing spot for feeding birds. One hummingbird likes to rest there between nectar-sipping tours. The feeders are usually packed with goldfinches, but the hummingbird doesn’t seem at all intimidated.

She perches on the branch and looks around thoughtfully at the other birds and her surroundings. After several minutes she rises straight up into the air like a helicopter and zooms forward into the flowers again.
