The 2014-15 Winter Finch Forecast indicates that a number of tree seed crops did poorly in Canada this year, so Purple Finches and Common Redpolls could show up at feeders further south. I have already seen more Purple and House Finches at my feeders in November than I’ve seen in my yard during the entire last decade.
I love Common Redpolls, but they are an irruptive species here so we don’t see them every winter.
There is a freakishly-early-in-the-season snowstorm bearing down on Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan today. Some places are expecting up to 18 inches of snow. I wonder if that will cause the finches to move even further south.
My feeders are stocked and ready!
