I started my Project Feederwatch bird-counting season two weeks ago. So far I’ve counted more American Goldfinches, House Finches and House Sparrows than normal. In fact my goldfinch number was so high that when I entered my data the computer program asked me to be sure it wasn’t a typo.
Over the weekend we had rain which transitioned to snow yesterday morning. Almost on cue with the fluffy flakes were flocks of birds including more goldfinches.
I saw one Pine Siskin late last week, but so far he hasn’t brought any friends with him, and I haven’t spotted any redpolls.
My favorite winter feeder bird is probably the always-active and seemingly-weather-resistant Dark-eyed Junco.
