Hummingbirds made their first appearance in my backyard much earlier than normal this summer. I saw my first one in mid-June. Hummingbirds will engage in crazy aerial acrobatics to defend their nesting and food territories, so I rarely see more than one at a time unless they are doing battle.
That’s why it was so strange and exciting to see two hummingbirds sitting right next to one another on my morning glory arbor in late July. They were both resting after a nectar-gathering trip through my zinnias and nicotianas.
I’m guessing that we had a hummingbird pair nesting in the neighborhood. The males don’t stick around for very long, so my arbor buddies were probably a mother and youngster.
