For the last five winters I’ve been blessed by the company of a small flock of cardinals. This year the males outnumber the females.
Cardinals like to forage for seeds on the ground, but they aren’t shy about visiting my raised platform feeders. My flock is especially fond of safflower seeds and peanuts, but they also eat sunflower seeds.
Look for cardinals at dusk. Sometimes it’s easier to hear the telltale “chip” song than to see them. Often on winter evenings after the sun has set and it’s almost completely dark outside I can just barely make out the silhouette of one or more cardinals grabbing a quick meal before heading off to roost.
