I got my wish and it appears that not one, but two Red-breasted Nuthatches will be spending the winter in my neighborhood. One showed up last month, and just yesterday there were two of them on my peanut feeder at the same time. The industrious little birds have been caching nuts like crazy.
Curiously it’s Black-capped Chickadees that I’m in short supply of this year. They are comical and acrobatic at the feeders just like the Red-breasted Nuthatches. In the past I’ve always had 3 or 4 chickadees regularly visiting my feeders, and sometimes as many as eight, but right now there’s just one lone—but busy—little bird.
