Some Red-winged Blackbirds stay in our area throughout the year, but I rarely see them in the winter. I know spring has arrived when large flocks of the birds arrive in our neighborhood and sit in the treetops and vocalize.
We don’t have any chattering flocks yet, but the warm weather we’ve been enjoying lately encouraged some males to show up at my feeders. What surprised me is that they are already flashing their red and yellow shoulder patches. I’ve never seen that before in February.
