Welcome Back, Nuthatches!

My overcapacity-crowd of goldfinches and Red-winged Blackbirds finally moved on, so yesterday I decided it was safe to fill the birdfeeders again. Before I was finished hanging up the peanut feeder, a Red-breasted Nuthatch tried to land on it. I was so excited to see him.

I shrieked with excitement, and he froze in place, so I talked to him for a bit and told him how happy I was that he had arrived. These birds come to our area for the winter only every couple of years, and I never know which years to expect them. It’s all dependent on how much food is available in the Boreal forest of Canada.

You know that feeling you get when you see a puppy and your heart swells and you just want to squish it in your arms? That’s how excited I get when I see Red-breasted Nuthatches. I don’t think the squishing thing would work out well, though, so I keep a safe distance.

After I finished filling all my feeders I went back inside the house. Before I’d even sat down in my chair I saw a two Red-breasted Nuthatches fly to the peanut feeder together.

I hope they both stay for the winter!
