A Trick to Beat the Starlings

The Red-breasted Nuthatches that arrived in our neighborhood last month are still hanging around the bird feeders.

I hope that means they’ll be staying for the entire winter!

Nuthatches eat peanuts, sunflower seeds and suet. Unfortunately, those are also the favorites of the messy European Starling gang that has recently invaded my feeders.

My mom told me a trick that works quite well. Only fill your peanut feeders a quarter of the way full. Big, piggy birds like the starlings have trouble hanging onto the feeder while still grabbing the peanuts. But tiny nuthatches and chickadees can still snatch peanuts with ease!
