It’s that time of year when my backyard birds start putting away pounds of food in a day. I just have to remember that this phase only lasts during fall migration and then things calm down. Otherwise I would need to get a second mortgage on my house.
The other day I filled my in-the-shell peanut feeder and when I came back from my errands a few hours later, the Blue Jays had already emptied it out. They aren’t eating those nuts—just caching them for winter. But it sure didn’t take long for them to hide a pound of peanuts!
I hear White-throated Sparrows in my backyard (but haven’t seen any yet) and some Juncos arrived last week. This morning I had a Red-winged Blackbird on my feeder.
The fall migration is in full swing!
