This huge hawk was sitting in our neighbor’s Silver Maple the other morning watching the traffic whiz by. After I viewed it through binoculars I knew it wasn’t a Red-tailed Hawk and the bird was much too big (and the tail too stumpy) to be a Cooper’s or Sharp-shinned Hawk.
Our new visitor is a Broad-winged Hawk. These birds are notorious for migrating in large flocks that can number in the thousands. The neighborhood birds think one is plenty.
