One of my favorite places to go birdwatching during spring migration was nearly completely wiped out by flooding rains last August.
The exposed soil and sand you see in the photo above used to be covered with dozens and dozens of trees. But they were all swept below into a creek which had become a raging river. The asphalt path situated along that creek was washed away, and the bridges over the creek were severely damaged or destroyed.
As I mentioned last fall, there are still plenty of trees in the conservancy that survived, so I’m sure many of the migrating birds will return this year just like they do every year. But most of the paths and bridges have only been temporarily repaired (the real work will begin in 2020), and I fear going there would make me feel like an unwelcome intruder.
