A Special Fall Visitor

The other day I saw a flash of yellow and black in front of the bay window in my office, but the bird was too small to be a goldfinch. I jumped out of my chair to get a better look and that’s when I saw this female American Redstart in a nearby shrub.

In the spring warblers are much easier to spot because they sing or call, and the males are are brightly-colored. But during the fall migration, songbirds are mostly quiet and the males have already molted into their bland winter “outfits.”

She has a long journey ahead of her. American Redstarts spend their winters in Central America and Mexico.

She hung around for a few minutes, searching for insects, and then off she flew!
