As I was tucking my seedlings into my flowerbeds the other day, this bird watched me thoughtfully from the telephone wire above my head. He stayed there for a very long time inspecting my work.
I had a pretty good idea what species he was, but it was very bright out and hard to see much more than a silhouette.
It wasn’t until he dove off the wire and into a tree that I knew for sure it was a Great Crested Flycatcher. You can see his bright yellow belly and a reddish-brown tail:
Flycatchers eat all sorts of insects including many types of beetles. Now I just need to convince him to hang around and enjoy the neighborhood delicacy….Japanese Beetles.
