Some of the dahlias I purchased this spring still look fantastic and are cranking out new blooms weekly. But yesterday I chose to pull two of them from their pots because they had powdery mildew and were starting to fade away.
Thankfully I have a handful of short zinnias temporarily taking up space in one of my backyard flowerbeds. I want to put some daylilies there but the daylily farm I like to order from doesn’t ship until July each summer. Thus the zinnia placeholders.
Zinnias generally don’t like to be transplanted, but I’ve found that if you take enough soil and only minimally disturb the roots, you can safety transplant just about any flowers mid-season—-well, unless they have a taproot.
The zinnias are now sitting in a pot on a ledge 3 feet above the ground and probably very thankful to be out of range of the herd of chomping bunnies that has taken over my backyard this summer.
