I had a hard time finding seeds for some of the rudbeckia cultivars I’ve grown for many years, so I sprouted one I haven’t grown in more than 10 years—‘Goldilocks’. The golden-yellow flowers are double and semi-double.
The trick is that when it came time to plant them, I couldn’t remember how tall they grow, nor could I find consistent information online about this cultivar’s height. I saw 18 to 24 inches but also 36 to 48 inches depending on the source. Well that’s the difference between a 2nd or 3rd row plant and a giant plant that anchors the very back row. I gambled and went with the 3rd row. It was a good call as my plants are about 20 inches tall.
My rudbeckias often get a fungus or bacteria that causes the plants to die away in mid to late summer, but so far ‘Goldilocks’ is thriving.
