The Canada Geese appear to be taking their sweet time high-tailing it out of southern Wisconsin to someplace warmer for the winter. Our golf courses and ponds and farm fields are still full of geese.
As long as there’s open water available, they really have no reason to hurry along.
According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds website: “Migrating flocks generally include loose aggregations of family groups and individuals, in both spring and fall. Flights usually begin at dusk, but may begin anytime of day, and birds fly both night and day. They move in a V formation, with experienced individuals taking turns leading the flock.”
I’ve heard geese at dusk the last several nights, so at least some of them are on the move.
