Chickadees will eat from any winter feeder—tube, platform, hopper and even suet cages.
Black oil sunflower is always mentioned as the seed loved by the most number of species, but in my backyard peanut halves are the biggest hit, and my chickadees love peanuts.
Peanuts are ridiculously pricey this year (around here it’s currently $40 for a 20lb bag), so I’m mixing my own seed and keeping peanuts in play but rationing them out more slowly—especially since if a flock of starlings shows up they will take all the peanuts in a matter of minutes.
Chickadees will happily eat suet, hulled and black oil sunflower seeds, Nyger and safflower seeds.
Rather than sit at a feeder for any length of time (like Mourning Doves do), Chickadees usually grab their preferred seed or nut and fly off to a shrub or tree to eat it.
