A couple inches of snow fell over the New Year’s weekend, and to my surprise my feeders were suddenly full of House Finches. I haven’t seen that many at one time in at least twenty years. There must’ve been at least 30-40 birds. The most I usually see at any one time in my backyard in the winter is 5 or 6. Some winters I don’t see any at all.
They took over every platform and hanging feeder, but they politely shared with some goldfinches and House Sparrows.
The next day the sun came out and the flock was gone.
Maybe they were just passing through, or maybe they’ll be back the next time it snows.
