The Breakfast Bunch

On cold winter mornings, a mixed flock of finches sits in our front yard serviceberry sunning themselves before getting on with their day. There are usually 20 to 30 birds and they decorate the branches all puffed up and crabby-looking until the rising sun is no longer shining on them.

I’ve had zero luck capturing this scene because as soon as they see me, they un-fluff and/or some of the birds fly to a different tree.

But it gives me a chuckle every morning when I see them because they look like a group that was out partying too late the night before and haven’t yet had their coffee.
