In the snowstorm on Monday, a Brown-headed Cowbird landed on my platform feeder while I was standing at the window.
I’m not a cowbird fan (but really, is it their fault that the other birds are too dumb to notice that someone snuck an extra egg into their nests?). But I was tickled pink to see the little guy because they are always the first spring migrating bird to show up in my backyard (other than robins which don’t count because some of them overwinter here but keep a low profile).
Better yet, I keep track of when I see the first cowbird each spring, and this one is about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Yes, he could just have really poor judgement, but I’d like to think he knows something about an early spring!
