Quirky Catbird

I’ve decided Gray Catbirds will eat just about everything. Their regular diet is insects and fruit, so when they arrive in spring I’ll sometimes see them eating the oranges and grape jelly I put out for the Baltimore Orioles.

But the one that’s been hanging around our yard for the last 10 days loves peanuts!

He’s also quite fond of suet, so I removed one of the cakes and set it on a birdfeeder platform to give him easier access.

I could listen to a catbird sing all day long. They are mimics like mockingbirds, and their chatty, creative songs can last as long as 10 minutes.

They aren’t the prettiest songbird in the forest, but I like their cute little black caps. And they have a sneaky little rufous patch under their tails.
