I’ve spotted a lot of woolly bear caterpillars this fall. This handsome fellow was cruising down our front walkway the other day.
Yeah we’ve all heard that they supposedly predict how harsh winter is going to be, but entomologists say it’s actually the opposite—their colors indicate how harsh the PAST winter was because the longer the growing season, the more brown hairs these caterpillars display.
These larval forms of the Isabella Tiger Moth are also called “hedgehog caterpillars” because they curl up into a ball when disturbed.
