It doesn’t look much like spring around here after about 10 more inches of snow fell over the last 5 days, but the birds are already singing their spring breeding songs.
Instead of singing, woodpeckers drum on objects to share their territorial messages. Last year one of these birds (a Red-bellied Woodpecker) decided our chimney cap carried his rat-a-tat-tats quite nicely.
The first time he did it I was sitting right by our fireplace and I nearly had a heart attack. It sounded like gunfire! He continued using our chimney cap daily for about 3 weeks.
I’m hoping he finds a different instrument to bang on this spring!
