The first House Wren of the year arrived on April 24th this year. That’s a few days earlier than previous years.
Usually by now a pair of Black-capped Chickadees would be in one of my birdhouses and there would already be eggs or babies—they get an earlier start because they overwinter here whereas the wrens migrate here. That’s when I get nervous that the wren might poke a hole in their eggs or attack the nestlings. Wrens can be mean little critters.
We forgot to clean out the birdhouses (I blame the cold spring!), so that could explain why the chickadees took a pass on nesting in any of our houses this year.
You don’t have to worry about that with wrens, though. That little wren went right to work flinging out all of last year’s nesting material from 3 different birdhouses!
