Three different families of birds are nesting at the same time in our local Trader Joe’s sign (you can see them in the D, J and S). If this was my backyard it would be WAY too close for comfort and there would be territorial fighting. But in this more urban location the birds must relax the rules.
There’s probably more fighting to nab these prime spots in the first place. The garage is permanently open on two sides and the sign is covered on top by concrete, so the nests are protected from wind, rain and severe storms.
House Sparrows were flying in and out of one nest, but I didn’t stand around long enough to find out if all 3 were House Sparrows or if some House Finches also managed to move into that fancy neighborhood!
