Another reason I’m so fond of calendulas is that they can survive a hard freeze. A few weeks ago our nighttime temperature dropped to 24 degrees. By the following afternoon almost all of the plants in my yard were limp and lifeless. However, last week I went outside to fill the birdfeeders and noticed some color peeking out at me from one of my flowerbeds. It was a bright, yellow ‘Sunshine Flashback’ calendula.
I looked around at my other flowerbeds and found at least a half-dozen other calendula plants that had shrugged off the freeze and were blooming happily on an overcast, late-October day.
