I tried Bark Butter (spreadable suet) last year for the very first time after a little hanging birch log feeder caught my eye at our local Wild Birds Unlimited store.
It took most of last winter before the neighborhood birds considered that feeder worth a stop. Then it became so popular, that this spring I added a second feeder—this one is made of cedar.
I’ve used both Birdacious Bark Butter, and also Pine Tree Farms Tree Icing in the feeders and both attract suet-loving birds like woodpeckers and nuthatches.
Some of the species who have visited these feeders include Northern Flicker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker and White-breasted Nuthatch.
Even though these feeders are have no perches, I was concerned they might be a draw for some of the voracious backyard birds like European Starlings and Common Grackles. But so far only House Sparrows have tried to hang on long enough to nab some of the high-energy treat.
