I discovered this interesting little clump of moss the other day. It’s called American Tree Moss and it’s native to the Midwest including Wisconsin.
Up close it looks like a miniature grove of evergreen trees. It stood out in the middle of all the dead grass and leaves that are everywhere this time of year.
This moss spreads by tiny little stems and prefers moderate shade and moist conditions.
I was mostly surprised that it was still bright green even after several stretches of bitterly cold weather!
