A Big Flicker

Northern Flickers are mostly ground-feeding woodpeckers. They prefer insects like ants and beetles, but in the winter they will occasionally visit backyard feeders.

At least one flicker has been regularly visiting our suet feeders this winter.

My pet canary lets me know when any “big” birds arrive at the feeders like Common Grackles or crows. He sounds a canary-sized alarm.

Northern Flickers are bigger than a robin, and my canary has decided they also fall into that “big” category. Or maybe he’s just not used to seeing a bird with polka dots and a mustache!
