That Red Belly

In the woodpecker Bird Quiz, I mentioned that people often misidentify the Red-bellied Woodpecker because it and the Red-headed Woodpecker both have red coloring on their heads.

The other day I got a good shot of that rather-hidden red belly that gave the Red-bellied Woodpecker its name:

But it’s not easily visible when the bird is moving around.

I didn’t mention this in the bird quiz, but female Red-bellied Woodpeckers only have that bright red on the very back of their head/neck (the nape).

In all the years I’ve been feeding birds I’ve seen many male Red-bellied Woodpeckers but only a couple of females.

You can attract Red-bellied Woodpeckers to your yard with peanuts and suet.
