Brown Blobs Part Two: Snow Geese

As I shared in the last post, it’s fun to take a closer look at the brown blobs that appear in ponds and agricultural fields this time of year.

Remember that mass of Greater White-fronted Geese that Jill and I spotted in a field?

Thankfully we continued to scan the hundreds and hundreds of brown blobs with our binoculars, because we also noticed birds that were not brown—four Snow Geese! Neither of us had ever seen one before.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology shares that, “watching huge flocks of Snow Geese swirl down from the sky, amid a cacophony of honking, is a little like standing inside a snow globe.”

I hope to see that someday, but in the meantime I was thrilled just to be able to spend some time watching these 4 new-to-me birds honk and preen and forage.
