Zinnia ‘Jazzy Mix’

I had high hopes for these cute little zinnias. ‘Jazzy Mix’ has flowers that are only 1 to 2 inches in diameter.

Those flowers are double and semi-double and come in shades and combos of red, gold, burgundy-red, yellow, orange and cream.

I grow all kinds of zinnias every year. I like to sprout the seeds indoors in late winter so the plants bloom a little earlier than seeds sown directly in the ground.

But the ‘Jazzy Mix’ seeds had horrible germination. I even sowed seeds a second time when the first ones didn’t sprout. Of course that could just be a bad batch of seed.

I did manage to get a dozen plants from the 60 seeds I sowed. However the seedlings drove me crazy because they were so floppy and unruly. I was afraid I might behead them when pulling the trays in and out to be watered.

I made a note to not bother growing this zinnia again.

But when the colorful little flowers started blooming this summer, I was charmed:

‘Jazzy Mix’ grows 20 to 26 inches tall. The plants prefer full sun but will also grow in part-sun. Mine only get about 5 hours of sun each day.

I’m tempted to give them one more try next growing season. I’ll still sprout them indoors in late winter, but try waiting a week or two. Maybe then they won’t be so floppy.

The flowers are just so adorable that this cultivar deserves another chance!
