Calendula ‘Kinglet’ has bright yellow, orange and apricot-colored flowers.

The plants thrive in full sun to part-shade.

Calendulas are cool-season plants and can get a little ornery if the weather is hot and humid.

That’s indeed the kind of weather we’ve had this summer, but ‘Kinglet’ is still happily blooming and thriving in my flowerbeds.

This hardy annual grows 24 to 30 inches tall and blooms 65 days from seed sowing. I gave my plants a head start by sowing the seeds indoors about 4 weeks before our last average frost date.

Calendulas will self-seed if you don’t deadhead them, but they aren’t a nuisance. It’s been about 7 years since I last grew any of these plants, but I always loved how a few volunteers would pop up now and then.

I decided to grow calendulas again this year because I’m on a pollinator-friendly-flower kick, and these plants attract beneficial bees, butterflies and moths!
