I visited a trial garden recently and was intrigued by a row of what looked like wheat growing among the test flowers. The tag said ‘Silver Tip.’ I did a little research and discovered that ‘Silver Tip’ is considered an ornamental wheat but is officially a wheat/rye cross.
The plants grows 3 to 4 feet tall. The seed heads are silvery-white with long bristles of the same color (called awns). ‘Silver Tip’ can be used for dried flower arrangements and fall displays.
I found ‘Silver Tip’ seeds for sale at Johnny’s Selected Seeds. I think I will try growing some of them next year just for kicks.
