Dear Em. Do you know what kind of hawk is this? I saw one outside my home in Rochester NY and I have not been able to know what it is. I initially thought it was a falcon because of its size (it is way smaller than the red tail hawks I have seen around). It killed another bird that seems to be a raptor too. You have a beautiful site. Thanks.

Hi,
This is a Cooper’s Hawk. They are about 14 to 15 inches in size. To make things complicated, Cooper’s Hawks are nearly identical to Sharp-shinned Hawks, but Sharp-shinned are about 9-13″ long. Here’s more information from my favorite birding site:
