I think spring brings out a little of the goofy in all of us. The other day I noticed this cardinal in one of my flowerbeds:
He appeared to be eating grass:
This behavior went on for a few minutes. After he flew away I went outside to investigate. What I discovered were chewed blades of quackgrass. I didn’t see signs of a seed stalk. I’m pretty sure he was chomping on the grass.
Even the squirrel thought it was a bit odd:
