Overnight we received about an inch or so of the wet, heavy snow that always makes the trees so beautiful. My feeders are unusually quiet this morning. The birds must’ve looked out their tiny bedroom windows and decided to sleep in.
Speaking of birds…my friend and I took a little road trip yesterday to a woolen mill that was having an open house and tours of the milling operation (my friend likes to knit and has threatened to teach me). It wasn’t far from Madison, but after the visit, we took a wrong turn and ended up on some lazy country roads.
Coming around a curve my friend said “What’s that?” I looked around but didn’t see anything. “What?” I asked. “THAT!!” she exclaimed. In the road right in front of us stood a wild turkey (and me without a camera). I’ve seen them in the farm fields many times, but this was the closest I’d ever been to one. They are much bigger than I thought. No wonder the mail carriers that were being harrassed by turkeys on the west side of Madison earlier this year were afraid. When the bird stood up to fly into the the nearby trees, it must’ve stood at least 4 feet tall. Now that’s a big bird.
