Garden Winner: Zinnia ‘White Wedding’

I’ll readily admit I’m not a fan of the color white. I look horrible wearing it (if I win a free T-shirt and it’s white, I give it away), I think it’s a waste of a wall color (my motto is “Ridding the world of white, one wall at a time“) and nothing bores me to tears faster than an all-white flowerbed.

That’s why it was unusual that I decided to sprout a new zinnia from seed this year called ‘White Wedding.’ What appealed to me most about the plant is that it grows to a height of 14 to 16 inches. I often have difficulty finding annuals and perennials in that medium height range so white or not, I thought I’d give it a try.

Most of my other zinnias turned brown and shriveled up or succumbed to powdery mildew weeks ago, but ‘White Wedding’ is still blooming. I haven’t deadheaded any plants for two months now, so I’m surprised it’s still going strong. ‘White Wedding’ is easily one of the best zinnia varieties I’ve ever grown. Often, white zinnias and marigolds actually sport cream or greenish-white flowers, but the blooms on this zinnia are truly white.

My only problem with the plant was that Japanese Beetles (there she goes again with the beetle stories….) seem to be attracted to white more than any other color, so in August they really took a beating.

Despite the beetles and my distaste for the color white, ‘White Wedding’ was such a terrific plant that I will definitely sprout it again next year.
