Everything I’ve read about and experienced with Fox Sparrows suggests they rarely migrate in flocks. Apparently I’ve now experienced the exception to that rule because every time I see them in my yard, they double in number. Recently I was excited to see two Fox Sparrows at the same time. All other years I’ve only seen one bird.
For the next two weeks I didn’t see them again and assumed they’d migrated to their winter feeding grounds. Two days ago I was shocked to find four Fox Sparrows scratching for food under my thistle feeders.
As the sun was setting this evening, I looked out the window and there were eight Fox Sparrows. At this rate, they’ll soon be taking over the world!
