Last year I grew an interesting penstemon in a pot called ‘Phoenix Red.’ It’s technically a perennial, but only in Zones 7-11, so in our Zone 5 area its sold as an annual. I was quite impressed with ‘Phoenix Red’. The plant bloomed all summer long and attracted hummingbirds:
I will admit that the color was a little challenging to mix with some of my other potted plants like petunias and superbells, so this year I’m trying its sibling, the pretty ‘Phoenix Violet’:
Phoenix penstemons grow 18-24 inches tall with upright flower stalks that attract bees and butterflies (and hummingbirds).
My plant just started blooming this week. I hope it’s as prolific as ‘Phoenix Red’.
