I find myself photographing the underside and backside of things quite often, especially flowers. I happened upon the habit by accident while crawling around in the garden with my first digital camera. Now it’s second nature to me. It’s fun to get an entirely different perspective. Look how much more beautiful this zinnia is (photo above) when you can see the golden-yellow bloom against its green and black receptacle (the part where the stem meets the flower).
Daylilies can be even more surprising. Sometimes the colors are completely different between top and bottom. Here are photographs of the daylily ‘Wineberry Candy.’ This is the same bloom. All I did was change my camera position and suddenly instead of pink, I have a coral-colored flower:

You never know what you’ll get when you take pictures from different angles. I’m not afraid to crawl, crouch or even lie on my stomach if I have to. Although, I only do it in my backyard, and it helps that I’m pretty sure my neighbors already think I’m nuts.
