Balloon flowers rarely need to be divided. Some of my plants have been in the same place for 10 years, yet they still bloom their little hearts out each summer.
I’m trying to decide if I should make an exception with this plant. Some of the flowers are mutating back to white.
White flowers bore me, but these look pretty mixed in with the purple flowers. I just fear that eventually I will get nothing but white flowers.
Balloon flowers grow on deep taproots, so it’s more challenging to move or divide them. I’ve done it before with no problems, but it does set the plant back a bit. I hate to disturb an otherwise happy plant.
I still have plenty of time to think about it. So far it’s been a very chilly and wet spring. The tulips aren’t even blooming yet. Balloon flowers are one of the last perennials to peek out of the ground every year, so I still have a few weeks before making my final decision.
