For the past two years I’ve grown and been impressed with the annual red salvia, ‘Lighthouse’. This year I tried out its sibling ‘Purple Lighthouse’:
‘Purple Lighthouse’ grows 2 to 3 feet tall with dark-purple tubular flowers. I love the dark splash of color this plant added to the garden, but it didn’t grow nearly as impressively as one of my favorite tall salvias—‘Whopper Lighthouse’.
‘Purple Lighthouse’ is an easy-to-care-for plant that really begins to show off in late summer. The plants are easy to sprout indoors from seed and they aren’t bothered by pests or diseases.
I’m going to try ‘Lighthouse Purple’ again next year before I decide whether I want to continue growing it. I put quite a few plants in each of my flowerbeds, but they just didn’t give me the “wow” I was hoping for. Maybe I’ll have better luck next year.
