Cardinal Flowers

The wet spring made conditions ideal for my Cardinal flowers this year. Lobelia cardinalis is happiest in rich, moist soil. The brilliant-red flower spikes are showstoppers and serve as an “Eat here!” neon light for hungry hummingbirds.

This perennial is hardy in zones 3 to 9 and grows about 2 to 4 feet tall. I love the plants because they grow happily in partial shade without needing any staking.

The plants will give you a second flush of blooms if you cut off the spent flower spikes. Cardinal flowers start blooming in late July and early August—just as the hummingbirds are beginning their fall migration. Just be sure to keep them well-watered during dry spells.
